ANNUAL SEMINAR FOR TRIBUNAL
PERSONNEL 2009
A
seminar for the ministers working in
various metropolitan and eparchial
tribunals in Kerala and outside was
conducted at Mount St. Thomas from
11 to 13 May 2009 under the auspices
of the Syro Malabar Major
Archiepiscopal Ordinary Tribunal.
The seminar was inaugurated by
Justice K. Surendramohan, a judge in
the High Court of Kerala and it was
presided over by Mar Mathew
Moolakatt, the Archbishop of
Kottayam and the General Moderator
for the Administration of Justice in
the Syro Malabar Church. Rev. Dr.
Mathew Kochupurackal, the President
of the Major Archiepiscopal Tribunal
welcomed the participants. “In order
to pronounce fair judgements”, said
Justice Surendramohan in his
inaugural address, “any judge needs
grace from above, from God”. Mar
Moolakatt appraised the hard work
and dedication of the ministers
working in ecclesiastical courts.
Tribunals that analyse the validity
of marriages are in fact upholding
the divine dimension of marriage and
its unique role in building up the
society. Classes on various
canonical and civil issues were led
by Adv. Lilly James (Canon Law in
Civil Jurisprudence), Rev. Dr.
Mathew Kochupurackal (Roles of a
Defender of the Bond, a Promoter of
Justice and a Notary in Marriage
Nullity Cases), Rev. Dr. Jose
Chiramel (Role of a Judge in an
Ecclesiastical Tribunal), Rev. Dr.
Berchmans Kodackal (Inter-ecclesial
Marriages), Rev. Dr. Michael
Vattappalam (Determination of
Grounds in Marriage Nullity Cases),
Rev. Dr. Varghese Palathingal (New
Insight into c. 818) and Rev. Dr.
Joseph Mundakathil (Documentary
Process). Mar Varkey Vithayathil,
the Major Archbishop of the Syro
Malabar Church visited the
participants and delivered a
message. Sixty members took part in
the seminar.
