Global Meet of Syro-Malabar Migrants
in Mount St Thomas from August 18-21
A Global Meet of
the delegates of 8.5 lakhs Syro-Malabar
Catholics residing in the major
cites of India and in foreign
countries will take place in Mount
St Thomas, the Major archiepiscopal
curia of the Syro-Malabar church,
from August 18-21. About 400
delegates from different countries
will participate in the meet
organised under the auspices of the
Synodal commission for the
Evangelisation and Pastoral care of
the Migrants. The Chairman of the
Commission Bp.Gregory Karotempel CMI
(Rajkot) has constituted an
executive committee with Bp
Sebastian Adayathrath as President
and Fr.Joby Kootumkal MST as
secretary to conduct the Meet.
Honourable Union
Cabinet Minister Mr Vayalar Ravi
will inaugurate the Meet at 4.p.m
on August 18th
. In the inaugural meeting presided
over by the Major Archbishop
Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil,
BpCamillio Billa (Kuwait) and Bp
Paul Hinder (Saudi Arabia) will
speak. In the following days there
will be talks by Justice Kurian
Joseph (
High Court of Kerala), Fr.Paul
Thelakat, and Fr.Antony Narikulam
with discussions, cultural
programmes and pilgrimage to
different historical places of the
Church. On August 19 there is a
public Reception in the auditorium
of Renewal Centre at Kaloor,
Ernakulam, in which religious,
political and cultural leaders will
participate.
The objective of
the Meet is to strengthen the Syro-Malabar
migrants in their faith tradition as
well as to sort out some of their
problems as migrants in alien
cultures.
Out of the 15
countries where the Syro-Malabar
Catholics are a sizable number North
America, UAE, and Saudi Arabia rank
the top. There are 2.7 lakh Syro-Malabar
Catholics in the different cities of
India outside Kerala.
