A Short History

The Diocese of Sagar was erected on July 29, 1968 as an Apostolic Exarchate, by the Decree "Qua in apitus" which detached the civil district of Sagar , Raisen and Vidisha in Madhya Pradhesh from the Archdiocese of Bhopal. It was then entrusted to the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate. Rev. Fr. Clemens Thottungal, he Provincial Superior of the Devamatha Province of CMI took charge as the Apostolic Exarch on 1 November 1969.

By another decree "De Bono Animarum" of April 2, 1973, the civil district of Guna in M.P which formerly belonged to the Diocese of Ajmer-Jaipur was added to Sagar.

On February 26, 1977 by the Papal Bull "Divina Verba " of Pope Paul VI, the Exarchate of Sagar was raised to a Diocese and Mar Clemens Thottunkal was appointed its first Bishop. He was ordained Bishop on 25 Apirl 1977 and the diocese was inaugurated in 19 June 1977.

On his retirement, Mar Joseph Pastor Neelankavil was appointed the second Bishop of Sagar, through the Papal Bull, 'Resonant saepernumero'. He was ordained and installed Bishop on February 22, 1987.

When on 2 February 2006, Mar Joseph Pastor Neelankavil resigned from office, Mar Anthony Chirayath was nominated Bishop of Sagar whose Episcopal Ordination took place on 25 March 2006
