Pope Pius X by his Bull “Universi Christiani” of 1911 erected the Vicariate Apostolic of Kottayam for the Suddists within the Syro-Malabar Church and transferred Mar Mathew Makil, the then Vicar Apostolic of Changanacherry to Kottayam. On 21 December 1923 when the Syro-Malabar hierarchy was erected Kottayam became a diocese. On 29 April 1955 the jurisdiction of the bishop of Kottayam was extended to all Suddists within the then existing Metropolitan Province of Ernakulam. On January 10^th when the diocese of Changanacherry was made a Metropolitan See Kottayam was made its suffragan. Later on 9 May 2005 the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church raised the eparchy of Kottayam to the rank of Metropolitan See without a suffragan eparchy. 

Bp. Mar Kuriakose Kunnacherry was nominated Co-adjutor Bishop of Kottayam on 9 Dec. 1967 and was ordained Bishop on 24 Feb. 1968. When Bp. Mar Thomas Tharayil retired, Mar Kunnacherry took charge of the diocese as Bishop on 5 May 1974. On 28 Dec. 1998, Fr. Mathew Moolakkat, OSB, was nominated Co-adjutor Bishop of Kottayam. He was ordained Bishop on 6 Jan. 1999. On 9 May 2005 when the eparchy was raised to the rank of a metropolitan see without a suffragan, Mar Kunnacherry was appointed its first metropolitan and was enthroned on 3 June 2005. On 14 January 2006 Mar Kunnacherry resigned and Mar Mathew Moolakkatt was enthroned as the Metropolitan Archbishop of Kottayam. On 28 October 2006 Mar Jose Pandarasseril was ordained bishop and assumed the office of the Auxiliary Bishop of Kottayam.
