A
Short History |
|
The diocese of Kanjirapally was
established by the Papal Bull "Nos
beati Petri successores" of 26
February 1977 by Pope Paul VI .
This diocese was formed by the
division of the Archdiocese of
Changanacherry. It comprises the
areas of the Archdiocese of
Changanacherry, that fell
within the civil districts of
Kottayam, Idukki and
Pathanamthitta. Mar Joseph
Powathil, the then Aruxiliary
Bishop of Changanacherry was
appointed as the first Bishop of Kanjirapally on the same day and
took charge of the diocese on 12
May 1977. When Mar Joseph
Powathil was installed as the
Archbishop of Changanacherry, on
17 January 1986, Mar Mathew
Vattackuzhy was appointed the
Administrator of the diocese and
later as the new Bishop of
Kanjirapally on 26 December
1987. He succeeded Mar Joseph
Powathil, the first Bishop. When
Mar Vattackuzhy resigned, Pope
John Paul II appointed Fr.
Mathew Arackal as the new
bishop, on 19 January 2001. His
Episcopal Ordination took place
on 9 February 2001.
