Parish History

St. John Nepumsian Church Konthuruthy is the first and the only church in the Arch diocese of Ernakulam Angamaly in the name of “St. John Nepumsian” The Diamper Synod from June 20-26 in 1599 and the “Koonan Cross Pledge” on 3rd January 1653 at Mattanchery caused the Syrian Catholic to migrate to Konthuruthy. The faithful at that time went to Venduruthy and Ernakulam to receive the Sacraments

In 1823 then Divan gave permission to start a church in Konthuruthy earlier this was known as “Koman – Thuruth”. Thachil Mathu Tharakan gave help to start the church. In 1824 Bishop Miles Pendergast gave permission to Fr. Padayatt to start a church in the name of St. John Nepumsian. Rev. Fr. Geevarghese Malamel from South Parur was the first Vicar. As the number of Parishioners increased the present church was insufficient and after 34 years Vicar called a meeting under the leadership of Fr. Thaippodath and Fr. Yacob Kanatt. The Parishioners were very enthusiastic and they were ready to raise fund by contributing paddy and coconut. The new church was realized in 1876 and was blessed by Co – Adjustor Bishop of Varappuzha Bishop Marclinos De Santa Thressia.

After long 116 years the church was in dilapidated and then vicar Fr.Thomas Mattom called general body of parishioners and on 25th Oct. 1992 Mar Jacob Manathodath laid the foundation stone for the new church and after 4 years of team work the new present church was blessed on 11th February 1996 by Cardinal Antony Padiyara
