His Excellency Mar Mathew
Vattackuzhy was born at Chenkal,
Vazhoor on 20 February 1930. He had
his school education in Vazhoor and
Ponkunnam, after which he joined the
St. Thomas Petit Seminary, Parel,
Changanacherry. He had his Major
Seminary education in Papal
Seminary, Kandy and later Pune from
where he took his licentiate in
Philosophy and Theology. He was
ordained priest in Pune on 1st June,
1956.
From 1957 to 1959 he served as
Assistant Vicar at St. Mary's
Cathedral, Changanacherry. In 1959
he was appointed Secretary to
Archbishop Mar Mathew Kavukatt and
Chancellor of the Archdiocese. In
1960 he was sent to Rome for higher
studies and obtained his Doctorate
in Canon Law from the Pontifical
Lateran University.
Returning to Changanacherry in 1964
he was again appointed Chancellor of
the Archdiocese, and he continued in
the post till May 1977, except for a
brief period of one year (1973-74)
during which he did pastoral
ministry in the United States.
On 12 May, 1977 he was appointed
Vicar General of the newly erected
Diocese of Kanjirapally.
On 18 January 1986 he was elected
administrator of the Diocese of
Kanjirapally, when the See fell
vacant as a result of the transfer of
Mar Joseph Powathil as Archbishop of
Changanacherry.
He was nominated Bishop of
Kanjirapally on 20 December 1986. He
was ordained Bishop in St. Mary's
Old Church Kanjirapally by His Grace
Mar Joseph Powathil, Metropolitan
Archbishop of Changanacherry,
assisted by Mar Joseph
Pallickaparampil, Bishop of Palai on
26 February 1987. He took charge on
same say.
He Retired on January 19th 2001
