Mar Thomas Elavanal was born on
28 march 1950 at Mutholy Near Pala.
His parents are Zacharias & Thresia.
In 1955 the family migrated to
Chathenkottunada near Kuttiady in
Calicut district which comes under
the Diocese of Thamarassery. He
Completed his high school education
in 1966 at St. Mary’s High School,
Maruthonkara. He joined the MCBS
minor seminary in June 1966. He had
his first religious profession on
17th 1968 and was ordained priest by
Mar Sebastian Mankuzhikary on 22nd
December 1975. After the ordination
he was appointed in MCBS Minor
Seminary, Kottayam. In 1978, he went
to Rome for higher studies. He holds
a Licentiate in Liturgy from the
Pontifical Oriental Institute, Rome
and a Doctorate in Theology
from
Angelicum, Rome. He did his
Post Doctoral Course at the
Catholic University, Washington.
After his return in 1984, he was
appointed Rector of the MCBS
Seminary, Alwaye. In 1989 he was
elected Assistant Superior General
of the Congregation and in 1995, the
Superior General. From 1984 he has
been visiting Professor at the
Pontifical Seminary, Alwaye and St.
Thomas’ Apostolic Seminary,
Vadavathoor, Kottayam. He is the
author of the book, (THE MEMORIAL
CELEBRATION) and several articles in
English and Malayalam. He has been
member of the Syro-Malabar Central
Liturgical Committee since 1984 He
was ordained Bishop on 8th February,
1997 by
His Grace Archbishop Mar Varkey
Vithayathil, the then Apostolic
Administrator of the Syro-Malabar
Church and took charge of the
Diocese of Kalyan on the same day. |
