His Holiness Pope Paul VI
by the Bull "Apostolico
requirente" of June
27, 1974 bifurcated the
Diocese of Trichur and with
the addition of a few parishes
from the Diocese of Tellicherry
erected the Diocese of
Palghat as a suffragan of
the Archdiocese of Ernakulam.
When Trichur was raised
to the metropolitan status
in 1995, Palghat became
its suffragan. The Diocese
comprises the civil districts
of Palghat, Coimbatore,
Karur and Erode.
Mar Joseph Irimpen was appointed
the first Bishop of Palghat.
He was ordained Bishop and
took canonical possession
of the Diocese on 8th
September 1974. He administered
the Diocese till 1994 and
slept in the Lord on 23rd
August 1997.
On November 11, 1996 Pope
John Paul II appointed Mar
Jacob Manathodath as the
second Bishop of Palghat.
His enthronement and canonical
possession of the Diocese
took place on Feb. 1, 1997.
On
18 January 2010 the eparchy
of Palghat was bifurcated
and a new eparchy by name
Ramanathapuram was erected
comprising the four civil
districts of Coimbatore,
Erode, Tirupur and Karur
in Tamil Nadu. The eparchy
was inaugurated and the
first Bishop of Ramanathapuram
Mar Paul Alappatt was ordained
bishop and enthroned on
11 April 2010.
